Dominoes game basics

The object of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your domino tiles by placing them on the table. On each turn, you can place one of your tiles next to an end tile with a matching number of dots. If you do not have a tile that matches, you miss your turn.

Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips) or is blank.The tiles are identified by the number of spots on each end (e.g., 0-0, 0-1, 1-1, and so on). A standard domino set contains 28 tiles: each combination of numbers 0-0 through 6-6.

Each player gets a set number of tiles (usually 6-7) for their hand. The remaining tiles form the “boneyard.”

Rules

The first player places any tile of their choice on the table. Subsequent players, in turn, match one of their tiles with one of the open ends of the domino layout on the table. A tile must be placed so that the two matching ends are adjacent.

Only tiles that have a number matching the end of a connector tile can be played. If a player cannot play a tile from their hand, they must draw from the boneyard until they can play.

The round ends when a player plays all their tiles, or when the game is blocked (no player can move). In the latter case, the player with the least number of spots on their remaining tiles is the winner.

Strategy tips

Keep track of the tiles that have already been played to know what is still “out there.” For example, if you see a lot of 6’s on the board, you’ll know 6’s may be tough to match soon—there might be fewer 6’s left in opponents’ hands.
Doubles (like [6|6]) can be strategic because they have a smaller probability of being matched. Playing a double earlier when it can be matched often will help prevent you from getting stuck with a high-value tile later.
When deciding which tile to play, think about what numbers you have left and what numbers might come in handy. Try to keep some commonly appearing numbers in your hand to have more options on your next turn.
If someone struggles to play on a certain number, that likely tells you they lack that number. Use that information to your advantage by continuing to play tiles that require that number.
If you have a tile that can branch in two ways (e.g., [5|6]), playing that earlier might open multiple potential ways to attach tiles later. This is especially useful in “Double 6” sets where large numbers can be hard to match near the end.
